Jamil Yamani’s The Glittering City is a major new work that investigates issues which have resulted in a redefinition of Australia in the early 21st Century. Border protection, the treatment of asylum seekers and the processing of refugees have all played a dominant role in discourse and decision making throughout many tiers of Australian society in recent years.

The Glittering City locates contemporary cultural and political issues within two geographical sites – the Australian coastal border and Kakuma, the world’s largest refugee camp on the Kenyan/Sudanese border. It interrogates the forced withdrawal from homeland and the experience of migration and its symbolic relationship with Australia’s coast.
